Abstract

Understanding why people feel committed to preserving and transmitting a custom inherited from their grandparents is a challenge. In this case, the Urban-Historical Landscape of Morelia, Mexico, is approached from its social Imaginaries, or dynamic schemes of perception and action, which allow actors to represent, reproduce, and redefine the cultural heritage received. Some examples of the intangible heritage, and the Morelian urban landscape, were observed as emerging processes of meaning production, accumulation and transmission of meanings in a transgenerational manner, in which both socio-urban actors and the built space (urban layout, monuments, buildings, public space), participate, such as inhabited space, social regulations, and the cultural framework. To show these emerging processes, an interdisciplinary approach based on Phenomenological Architecture was used, consisting of an integration of social sciences, cognitive sciences, and philosophy, to understand and interpretate the phenomena of cultural identity, tangible and intangible cultural heritage, local knowledge, the sense of belonging to places, socio-urban imaginaries, and finally, cultural transmission. The results confirm that this phenomenological-hermeneutic perspective of Urban-Architectural Design validates the constructivist tendencies present in the aforementioned disciplinary areas, where new areas of studies on culture, cognition, and the hermeneutical-phenomenological model of society are opened.
