Abstract

Archaeological heritage is a tourist attraction that aims to communities’ sustainable development generally through its inclusion as a tourist offer in programs in typical towns, however, there are archaeological sites in urban context that seem to be a declining offer. A case study is carried out in Tenayuca archaeological site in the Valley of Mexico metropolitan area to understand its possible contributions to sustainable development. The global public policies and their application at the local level and the social perceptions are analyzed, in which it is realized that the urban context presents limitations for it to be a tool for sustainable development and the symbolization processes that give meaning to the archaeological heritage in the cities.
