BACKGROUND. Sogamoso City (Department of Boyacá) is located in the Oriental Mountains, a region high lyrich on phosphoric rocks and with a great content of fluorine. There have been found some signs (stains) that suggest there is any level of dental fluorosis among the ISS users. OBJECTIVE: To determine, through the Dean’s Index, the prevalence of dental fluorosis among 6-to-18-year-old students affiliated to the ISS of Sogamoso. METHODS: The study was observational descriptive. The population consisted of 18.000 students affiliated to the ISS of Sogamoso. The sample size calculated were 360 students, but the final number consisted of 320. Those students non-affiliated to the ISS and those with orthodontic treatment or deciduous dentition were excluded from the sample. Calibrated examiners, who determined one diagnosis for each patient using the Dean’s Index, carried out the clinical inspection. Data were analyzed descriptively. RESULTS: 9 students (2,81%) did not have fluorosis, 8 (2,5%) doubtfulgrade (0,5), 123 (38,43%) very low (1),87 (27,18%) low (2), 86 (26,87%) moderate (3) y 7 (2,18%) severe (4). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of stains similar to those of dental fluorosis among the users of the dental service of the ISS of Sogamoso was 97%; the Dean’s Index was 1.8, which corresponds to a middle level.
