Abstract

During the 20th century, Colombia built an ecosystem of non-commercial scientific publication. However, despite the significant number of journals that opted for this circulation, we still do not know of any employees employed to achieve this goal. In this article, we start from this gap in the literature and propose a historical spatial analysis of the circulation of Caldasia, a journal of biological sciences. We reflect on the geographies of circulation of the journal in relation to its circulation repertoire: The subscription does not pay, a circulation based on the exchange of gifts. To do so, submission records and correspondence of the journal's director were consulted. It is concluded that: the gift economy was a characteristic condition of the circulation of Caldasia; the analysis of non-commercial circulation mechanisms is central to understanding some forms of collaborative work that forged the geographies of scientific knowledge in the 20th century.
